Sepia

Painting in the sketchbook. And I can't recommend "Creative Illustration" by Andrew Loomis highly enough. It's a classic and I'm really enjoying pouring through the pages. It covers everything from basic form/shape all the way through illustrating magazine ads and the like.

We took pizza to the beach Saturday night. Ocean air and french fries are delightful. I wish I could say the same for the seagull that was tracking me - it made me feel vaguely Tippi Hedren-esque. Scrambling around the tidal pools was fun though and looking into the pools yields some great discoveries. Minnows sometimes get trapped in there during lowtide and there's oodles of other plants and creatures.

These are great drawings!I've never read the Loomis book but I'll hunt for it. Is it still in print? When you do photoshop work do you scan right from your sketchbook or do you do a finished painting and build on it? Or both?

Thanks! The Loomis book is great, but tough to get a hold of (it is out of print). My mom actually found it through interlibrary loan and I'm borrowing it from her.

As far as photoshop, I do scan and then color on top in photoshop. Sometimes I start a painting and then finish up the colors, just so that it keeps that hand rendered apperance with the brush strokes/non-uniformity in color.

That's a great idea, finishing a picture in photoshop.
